I met two sisters and a brother for our bi-annual meet in Marlborough. We go to Marlborough as is is about an hour's drive for us all. We have spent many a happy time in Cafe Uno and were disappointed to find that it had changed, however we ventured in. We all wish we hadn't bothered! First we had to wait ages for our drinks to appear and then a good twenty minutes for the food. When that arrrived it didn't look particularly appetising but, as we were hungry we got stuck in! Well, my burger was dry and tasteless. There was not a bit of onion in it nor any sign of seasoning, my brother's was the same. One of my sisters had a goats cheese sallad and then came as three pieces of goats cheese plonked on top of some lettuce..............no dressing at all. We then asked for a tomtao salad well.............it was just a tomato chopped in quarters with abit of onion on the top. I don't think I have ever seen that in my many trips to France! No nice slices of tomato with a lovely dressing just lumps! My other sister decided to have a mushroom topped with something and dauphinoise potatoes. The mushroom tasted of nothing and the onyl nice thing was the potatoes. We had two glasses of wine, a pint of beer and a glass of sparkling water and this came to just £70!! Next time we meet we are going to go to ASK!

Went in for the 2 course lunch menu, had an overcooked rubbery omlette with a handful of greasy undercooked chips, my husband had a thin slice of chicken coated in a very greasy parmesan and breadcrumb crust. Puddings are bought in, nice enough but nothing individual. We spend a lot of time in France and have never had food like this, even in little cafes. This restaurant is cashing in on the fact it is the only chain in town not selling pizzas, but unless it improves its standards it won''t last long as no one I know is recommending it.

ReportI recently tried out the new French restaurant in the High Street. First off it certainly seems a good move to have swapped one of Marlboroughs four Italian restaurants for, well, something other than an Italian restaurant. Having said that, of the Italian chains on the High Street Cafe Uno- which has been replaced by Brasserie Gerard- did have the widest ranging menu.
Back to Brasserie Gerard, though... It was lovely sitting in the front of the restaurant as the afternoon sun poured in and people sat outside enjoying the weather. The layout of the restaurant has not changed a great deal since the Cafe Uno days, but the new furniture in the front certainly gives the place a suitably French flavour.
I ordered the smaller (cheaper) portion of Moules (Mussels). It certainly turned out to be a starter- I must have miss read the menu as I thought they came with chips but that must have been the more expensive ones. They were nice enough. Personally I prefer my Moules Marinieres without cream and thats how Ive always had them in France. These were with, but thats just how some people do them. They werent bad.
The staff were fantastic, extremely friendly and helpful, ten out of ten for service.
It is difficult to judge the food fairly, or at least thoroughly, as my choice was limited to what I could afford- or rather what I could justify spending on lunch. Its certainly not somewhere I could go for lunch regularly- it would have to be saved for special occasions. However in the towns where Brasserie Gerard Restaurants are to be found there will always be people able to spend a little more and Marlborough is no exception to that rule. Im sure theyll do well here.
