The Watermill, one of the UK’s most successful theatres, brings a new adaptation of GULLIVER’S TRAVELS to The Theatre On The Hill, Marlborough for one night only- Saturday May 22nd at 7.30pm.

The Watermill is an acclaimed, relatively local theatre which has transferred more productions into the West End than any other regional theatre, and it has a well deserved reputation for creating quality shows.

Gulliver’s Travels is a book many have heard of but few have read. Some may be under the impression that it is a book for children, but this production is suitable for age 14 UPWARDS. Written in the 18th century by Jonathan Swift, the adventure story chronicles Gulliver’s fantastic journeys into unknown worlds.  His cousin and wife are amused at his tales and believe them to be the product of his imagination. No-one has heard of the world of Lilliput where its inhabitants are only 6 inches tall or Brobdingnag where the people are giants.  Gulliver is frustrated by the disbelief and decides to takes his wife on his next journey.

This new adaptation by Toby Hulse brings to life the extraordinary scenes of Gulliver’s adventures.  Toby, a director and playwright, is well known for his adventurous work.

Ade Morris, The Watermill Outreach Director is no stranger to directing Watermill shows for its rural tours.  His work includes THE STORY OF A GREAT LADY and THE GARDEN OF LLANGOED.

The talented company are: Verity Hewlett who has worked extensively in professional theatres in the South of England, and recently appeared in Raising Voices at The Watermill; Morgan Philpott who is currently on tour with Birmingham Stage Company playing Sir Toby Belch in TWELFTH NIGHT; Michael Strobel who appeared at The Watermill in MR AND MRS SCHULTZ.

Verity says of the production:

“This adaptation is brilliantly envisioned as it reveals as much about the effect of Gulliver’s explorations on his wife and cousin as it does upon his own indefatigable and fierce mind.

Gulliver feels like an acting feast! It is exhilerating, demanding on its audience and generous in the pay-off by the end of the show. The questions it raises on human nature then and now are very pressing and pertinent at the moment with the country in the political situation it is in now. At times pythonesque and at times very Freudian - stretching the poles of comedy and tragedy in equal measure. My colleagues are constantly inspiring and Ade, the Director, has navigated the process it felt with great ease and allowed us the freedom to grapple the twists and turns together. I cannot wait to see how the show grows!”

The Watermill Theatre Production of Gulliver’s Travels will be at Theatre on the Hill, St. John’s School, Marlborough on Saturday May 22nd at 7.30pm. Tickets are £12 full price, £7.50 concessions. Box Office: 01672 517888. Suitable for age 14 upwards.

Supported by The Leche Trust.

The St. John's show isn't on the tour programme I have for Gulliver's Travels. This is great news- saves me a trip to Newbury!
