Sainsbury’s have confirmed their plans to build a foodstore in Marlborough by submitting a planning application to Wiltshire Council. The people of Marlborough will be able to view those plans at an exhibition on April 8th, 9th and 10th.

Sainsbury’s are proposing a foodstore with a sales area of 15,000 sq ft at the Wiltshire Council depot site on Salisbury Road, Marlborough. The store would “offer quality food to suit customers with a range of budgets”. It will stock items from Sainsbury’s Basics range through to Taste the Difference.
Sainsbury’s say the store would create up to 150 jobs and if Wiltshire Council grants planning permission the store could be open in summer 2011.
Jamie Baker, Regional Development Executive for Sainsbury’s, said: “We’ve had some useful and positive feedback from the local community regarding our plans which we’re keen to share publicly at an exhibition on April 8th, 9th and 10th.
“Sainsbury’s are committed to proposals for a store which will offer something for everyone in the town – from our Basics range, which compares on price to other stores such as Tesco and ASDA without compromising on Sainsbury’s quality, to our award winning Taste the Difference range."
Commenting on the decision by Wiltshire Council to delay the decision on Tesco’s application, Baker continued: “New foodstore developments become part of the retail fabric of a town so it’s important that Councils make the right decision. We understand that a decision will be made in the near future. This short-term delay will help to ensure the best long-term outcome for Marlborough.”

Surely 3 million pounds is better than nothing which is what we would get from the Tesco deal.
The homes/work idea is just that, an idea, no one has come forward who wants to build them yet.
Just to put this quote right from Alec.....
"There is little difference if any between the quality of goods of all three and share many suppliers with different labelling"
As Waitrose own and run many of their own farms and various other things, even down to running their own fishing fleet, I very much doubt the others share the produce from them let alone the quality.

ReportDo you really think the people of Marlborough would see any of that £3m ??!!!
Surely better to take the money on offer for the site from residential developers - at least the Town would see new housing & live/work units built.
The business park is a much better suited site for a supermarket- whether for Tesco, Sainsburys, Morrisons or anyone else. The fact that the land remains undeveloped demonstrates there is insufficient demand from industry - surely better to see it put to an economically active use than remain fallow.

ReportSainsburys would at least add 3 million or so pounds to the council coffers witch may get used to keep our rates down

ReportAs Sainsburys would be paying Wiltshire council to buy the land (at least 3 million pounds) this would be the better option for Wiltshire as at least some money would go to the council and maybe, just maybe keep all our rates down
