Local businessman Martin Houlden, who is standing as an Independent in the forthcoming election, has been running two polls about the Wiltshire PCT on his campaign website martinsmanifesto.com.

Martin has been involved with The Friends of Savernake since 2008, and was the first Parliamentary candidate to build an internet poll, which has been running since March of this year. On it, he asks two questions:

Do you have confidence in the Chairman and Chief Executive of NHS Wiltshire.

Where do you think the proposed Devizes Primary Care Centre should be situated?

So far, over 90% of respondents DO NOT have any confidence in the leadership at the top of the PCT, which is a damning verdict. As for the site for the Primary Care Centre, it's a two-horse race between the Green Lane site (which started off ahead) but has been caught and passed in favour of renovating the old Hospital site, which currently stands at 55% of the votes polled.

Martin says "It's clear that Wiltshire residents are extremely unhappy with the decisions that have been made by Wiltshire NHS over the last few years. Since the original "Pathways For Change" document, they have consistently ignored our wishes, and seem to make decisions on public healthcare, in private. What we need is a change of leadership to make the PCT more accountable, so they start to make fair decisions, openly and transparently and do what is in the best interests of the public.

The other Devizes Constituency candidates for the election next week are: Junab Ali- Labour Party, David Carpenter- English Democrat Party,  Fiona Hornby- Lib Dem, Patricia Bryant-UKIP , Nic Combe- Libertarian Party, Mark Fletcher- Green Party  and Claire Perry- Conservative.

I doubt there's anyone in Wiltshire (apart from those employed at PCT management level of course) who have faith in the CEO or Chairman.  The breathtaking failure to listen to first the wishes and then the problems encountered by patients is beyond all understanding.  The health service, which is so caring and compassionate at the front line, cannot be run as an efficient business or as a target driven organisation.  It just doesn't work.  Anecdotal evidence shows this, but it is so difficult to quantify the anecdotal stuff, as many have found.  The top layer of management adopt a nanny state attitude of "we know best and we are always right".  There is no real discussion to be had - but most of all there is a smug self satisfied auror of having learned how to tick boxes in order to gain spurious approval from government lead quangos.  A change of government cannot come soon enough.
