On Wednesday (February 24th) Marlborough residents will have the chance to watch the film, The End of the Line for free, courtesy of Marlborough Climate Pledge and Waitrose.

Waitrose has sponsored the film at a national level and the local branch is supporting Marlborough Climate Pledge in showing the film at 8pm on Wednesday at St. Mary’s Church Hall.

The End of the Line premiered at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival and is now playing in hundreds of cinemas, aquariums, and universities across the US and the UK. The makers describe it as “nothing short of the inconvenient truth about the devastating effect of overfishing on the world’s ecosystems.”

The New York Times calls it “vital”, “well-researched,” and “even-handed”: a film “that subverts our ancient faith in the ocean as an inexhaustible resource, offering a persuasive case that the major species of edible fish are headed for extinction.”

Waitrose launched its Responsible Fishing Policy 12 years ago, which includes a complete ban on any threatened species and on damaging fishing methods such as beam trawling. All its fish are from sustainable wild sources or, if farmed fish, from responsible farming systems

The Marine Conservation Society says Waitrose is the UK retailer to stock the largest number of fish from its recommended 'Fish to Eat' list.

Andy Davies, Manager of Waitrose’ Marlborough Branch said,

“Waitrose Marlborough are delighted to be involved with the screening of The End of the Line film on Wednesday evening. The specialist fish team at Waitrose have undergone industry leading training and development. The team and I will be on hand after the film to answer any questions people may have on our sourcing policy.

We've worked closely with Marlborough Climate Pledge for many years.

A couple of years ago we worked together to raise awareness of carrier bag use and through this joint venture we managed to reduce the number of free bags given away each week in Waitrose Marlborough by  50%."

Entry is free, but contributions are welcome to help with the costs of venue hire.
