International artist Nikolay Stoyanov presents his latest exhibition of bold, bright paintings at Ridgeway Gallery, Marlborough, 10 October to 7 November.
Nikolay
Stoyanov’s painting tantalizes imaginations and eyes alike as he
skillfully employs oil, brush and canvas to express his emotions and
ideas.
Nikolay’s
stylised paintings feature characters from fiction and legend such as
Don Juan, bullfighters, as well as county and cityscapes often as if
viewed through a fish-eye lens. Through his application of bold,
bright, colourful oils, Nikolay hopes his paintings will enable the
viewer to build a bridge between the spirit and body, ignoring time and
space, drawing you into the ‘moment of now’.
Born
into a family of artists, Nikolay participated in National and
International assemblies for young artists and at age thirteen was
enrolled at a private school for fine art. Tutored by one of Bulgaria’s
best known painters, Botio Botrev, Nikolay graduated from St. Cyril and
St. Methodius University of Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria, with a master’s
degree in oil painting.
He moved from Bulgaria to Paris seeking
out the famous Bohemian art scene, but found it had long since passed
into legend. Faced with an expiring visa, he joined up to the Foreign
Legion and his artistic talents were put to work on Keppyn Blanc, the
Legion’s magazine. With the prospects of a posting to Africa to work on
bomb disposal Nikolay fled the Legion and found refuge in Belgium where
his work soon began to attract galleries and buyers from all around
Europe.
Nikolay has exhibited in solo shows throughout Europe before moving to the UK. Currently living in Newbury, Berkshire, Ridgeway Gallery is showing his 11th solo exhibition.

Those colours certainly brighten up what has been an exceptionally grey day! No, I don't suppose being an artist prepares you particularly well for bomb disposal...
