Due to horrific recent events & indeed past criminal activity it has caused me to rethink my idealistic views of Marlborough & I want to put it to the council to insert CCTV cameras in ALL public areas esp our hightstreet & the new skate park. These cameras I believe are desperatlely needed & they would help the police catch any criminal activity & indeed help us residents feel safer in our own town.  Please take a look at the group on fcebook below is the link. Please join if you feel the same as we do. Thankyou your support is very much appreciated.

A couple of years ago I, as then-president of the Chamber of Commerce, was involved in discussions with the town council and police over the provision of CCTV in Marlborough.

The stumbling block was the cost - £50,000 minimum would be needed to buy and install a system in High Street alone. A base would be needed as a monitoring station and volunteers needed to man the screens (although this can be outsourced - at further cost).

Neither the town council nor the police had the budget to provide CCTV. The funds certainly weren't going to come through the business community. There were, at the time, no national or local grants available for CCTV schemes - Marlborough had missed the boat in the mid to late 90s. I'm not aware that this situation has changed. The working party was wrapped up.

If Marlborough wants CCTV, Marlborough People will have to pay for it. Perhaps a campaign should concentrate on a willingness to have a one-off increase of £10 added to the town council's share of the council tax precept?

Meanwhile Marlborough remains the only town on the M4 / A4 corridor between Bristol and London not to have CCTV. The criminal community knows this, which is why gangs of shoplifters, pickpockets, confidence tricksters and cash machine riggers regularly frequent our town.

The louts also know they are unmonitored, although thankfully Marlborough still remains one of the safest towns in the UK in which to live.

    Good like with your campaign.
