Here’s a round up of Marlborough pubs and where’s best for what...
-
The Lamb.
-
The Sun.
-
The Crown.
Best for food
If you aren’t specifically looking for cheap eats the food at The Lamb, The Sun and The Crown is really good at the moment. All three were recommended to me and all three lived up to their recommendations, so this is not just my personal opinion. Each of the pubs has very friendly, helpful staff. The Lamb and The Sun in particular are ultra cosy in the darker months, especially when there’s a fire crackling away. The Lamb also has a great juke box and the occasional live band on.
Best for cheap eats
The Royal Oak does 2 for 1 meals during the week. If you like more of a bar-style pub this or Azuza is the place for you. The food at the The Welly is pretty reasonable too.
Best for fish and chips
If you are a fan of pub fish and chips head for The Bear. They also have a great range of Arkell’s Ales.
Best for live music
I would definitely describe Azuza as more of a cafe/bar than a pub, but they do really reasonably priced drinks and have completely free sets by known and up and coming acts, organised in conjunction with Sound Knowledge. The Lamb sometimes has a band in, normally on Sunday evenings. The Green Dragon has open mic nights from time to time and the occasional band.
Some of the best village pubs
Seen Band of Brothers? When they did their training in the Aldbourne area before going out to France, Winters etc used to drink in the Blue Boar in Aldbourne. You can still see their drinking society plaque in there. Great food too.
To be fair I haven’t been to The Barge Inn at Honeystreet for years but everyone seems to love it as a “proper pub” where there is camping in the summer and they sometimes have gigs.
The Horseshoe Inn at Mildenhall is a cosy pub with good food and friendly staff.
If I’ve missed out your local or you totally disagree with anything I’ve said feel free to say so in the comments section below or to big up your local with a review in the Marlborough People Business Directory. These are just my opinions on the pubs I’m familiar with and your opinion is equally if not more important!
