Work on the new Pewsey library has taken a big step forward with the assembly on site of the wooden frame that will support the building.

Cllr John Thomson, deputy leader of Wiltshire Council and Cabinet member for adult care, communities and libraries carried out the “topping out” ceremony on Thursday (July 29).

Cllr Thomson said: “The new Pewsey library is on schedule to open before Christmas. Now that the frame has been delivered the building is going up very quickly.  It will offer a bigger and better facility for the whole community with space for everyone, whatever their age or reason for using the library.

The new library will be the first in Wiltshire to offer a personal care room which will offer washing and changing facilities for adults and children with severe physical disabilities. The room will be a public facility and available to everyone, not just those visiting the library.”

The library will have computers offering free internet access, community and council information, a study space and reading area. Other facilities will include a meeting room where people can meet with council officers and 'touchdown' facilities to enable Council staff to work from the library.

Cllr Thomson added: “We have worked closely with Pewsey Parish Council and the Area Board to determine the facilities that should be provided in the building and what the opening hours should be.

Local people have been involved in suggesting books they would like to see included in the book stock and we are working with schools and young people to hear their ideas for books they would like to see stocked.”
